Quality input determines quality output. KSL is committed providing quality legal education in order to generate leading legal professionals.
Legal profession demand qualified intellectuals with high quality service. It also demands socially responsive and communitarian professionals. So as to ensure the high credibility of the legal profession in Nepal, KSL ventured setting up an institution with commitment to impart modern, objective, communitarian and socially responsive legal education. Its academic programs are designed in such a way that they address the rudimentary concept of people on the legal profession as well as to transform the traditional paradigm of teaching law into a socially responsive, open and research-based methodology. KSL is striving hard to transform itself into a Center of Excellence in the field of legal education not only in Nepal but also in the South Asia region. The following characters justify our vision, mission and values:
KSL has completely or to a greater extent ended the lecture teaching methodology and has adopted pragmatically scientific and research oriented approaches of teaching.
It no longer follows the practice of coaching or orientation of merely dogmatic values of legal and justice system; rather students are given opportunity to experience the real situation and to test the applicability of jurisprudential theories in practice.
It has put an end to longstanding practice of insulated orientation method. Students have tremendous opportunities of working in clinics and applying them in real practice. This method helps them develop a unique and practical understanding of laws and frame their understanding based on empirically tested findings.
It does not treat its students as 'Ginny-Pig' upon which, professor's traditional ideas are tested upon. We strongly believe that every student has unending potentials of originality and creativity. We make our best efforts to refurbish them and help them develop as sound professional. We are, therefore, careful that students be not trained simply as parrot which can only repeat what it learns.
It provides an interdisciplinary approach to teach law. Its regular programs have incorporated sociology, management, political science, history, economics, and research methodology as integral part of the legal education.
It has launched students' exchange program to encourage national and international students to be exposed in development of law and justice system in other countries. Likewise, KSL has launched a number of innovative programs for the successful imp lamentation of the programs and pedagogy, eg. Winter Residential School on Economic, Social and Development Rights. Street Law Program, Clinical Legal Aid Programs, Residential Programs, Student Community Outreach Program Himalayan Field School, Intensive classes, seminars and discussions and the use of technology like Polycom technology, and other computer based technology in advanced teaching are major interventions in this regard. These programs provide students an opportunity to work with team spirit, understand issues critically, develop academic excellence and broaden knowledge on the subject matter.
KSL is not a private and profit-oriented venture with business motive. It is service-oriented community college. It maintains a moderate fee system so as to encourage students from every economical background. It reserves few quotas of scholarship for economically backwarded and socially marginalized or disenfranchised community. We have been supporting a group of students with various Scholarship fund which has been created to cater the scholarship need of the industrious, intelligent but economically poor and marginalized students.
KSL has received recognition as a promising and rapidly progressing law college in the South Asian Region. This recognition is partly due to the exposure of the students to internationally renowned programs such as Henry Dunant, Philip C. Jessup and their success in garnering different awards from such programs. It has been an impetus for the rapid development to become a "Center of Excellence" in near future.
The South Asian Law Schools (SALS) Forum for Human Rights serves as a catalyst for academic collaboration with legal institutions in the region and abroad. It also makes a direct collaboration with the Sydney University which has launched the masters' program in Human Rights and Democratization. KSL deserves the credit of being instrumental in creating this forum, which promotes academic interventions and institutional relations with universities in India, China, The USA, Bangladesh, Japan, and The UK, Australia to name a major few.
With these strength and the best wishes of our well wishers we are now moving ahead with an idea of transforming the school into a `deemed university' in the near future. As a preparation for this, we have been working for the additional infrastructural set up. Now, we already had our extended Outreach Residential School with the capacity of 100 students at Phulbari in Kavrepalanchowk district. This extended school has been used to conduct Clinical works, Intensive classes and seminar programs of the school. Right now, we are planning to develop a residential B.A. LL.B. program which will provide the residential facility to the students.
At the end, I would like to reiterate our commitment for significant development of legal education in Nepal.
