Organized Feminist TWAIL (Third World Approaches to International Law) Collective in collaboration with London South Bank University
In collaboration with London South Bank University, Kathmandu School of Law (Research Department) organized Feminist TWAIL (Third World Approaches to International Law) Collective on 13-14 June 2024, at its Bhaktapur campus. Founded in 2021, Feminist TWAIL Collective is dedicated to connecting scholars and activists who work at the intersection of critical feminism and international law with the aim of highlighting their voices and creating a space for fostering collaborations through comradery, solidarity, and support.
The two-day workshop provided a common platform for the founders of Feminist TWAIL Collective-- Dr Farnush Ghadery, Senior Lecturer (London South Bank University); Rohini Sen, Associate Professor (Jindal Global Law School); and Dr Shaimaa Abdelkarim, Assistant Professor, (University of Birmingham), and other international scholars from the Global South to engage in critical discussions and contribute to the advancement of feminist perspectives within the framework of TWAIL. 11 papers were presented on various interconnected and critical themes ranging from Gendered hierarchies and international legal subjectivities; Narratives of gender justice through property, sustainability, and environment; Gendered violence and postcolonial anxieties: precarious spaces in international law.
In the open roundtable discussions, the Co-founders of Saathi Dr Madhuri Rana Singh, and Bandana Rana (who is also a member of the UN CEDAW Committee) shared their insights connecting feminist theory with practice and also on the painstaking journey of working for women's rights in the Nepalese context a few decades back.
Around 30 participants around the globe brainstormed TWAIL methodologies and way forward to it, while KSL students (BA LLB 4th and 5th years) and particularly Prof. Yubaraj Sangroula and Prof. Geeta Pathak reinforced applying de-colonial, and feminist approaches into the field of international law.
