Executive Director's Message

“Knowledge with your intervention keeps changing the world towards better.”

Twenty years back, we conceived a dream to alter the face of our nation through a competitive legal education that not just informs the state’s
functioning and governance but also leads the overall societal changes. In fact, it is this passion that laid the foundational stone of Kathmandu School of Law (KSL). While executing initiatives back in the late 1990s against social ills like inequality, trafficking, gender-based violence and systemic failures in the field of law and justice, it dawned to the present team of KSL that legal education is a prerequisite to bring about desired positive changes in the country. Hence, KSL emerged as a brainchild of all those local constraints, gradually realized in the care of non-profit motivation. Today, it stands out as an exception to the academic institutions with a business motive. Our only mission is to work tirelessly for a center of excellence with an academic ambience where we prepare students for the increasingly complex and rapidly changing world with a sensitivity to serve the disenfranchised people in particular.

We feel proud to acknowledge that we made a breakthrough in the modernization of legal education in Nepal by initiating the five years BA LLB integrated course with our student-centric pedagogies. For many years, we have been yielding brilliant performances in Nepal Bar Council, Government Services, and University Exams. Significant numbers of our students of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees have landed on to important government services holding senior positions like Joint Secretary, Under Secretary, Deputy Director, Deputy Government Attorney and others. Similarly, our students have pursued higher studies in premium universities like Harvard Law School, Oxford University, Cambridge University, Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, University of Oslo, Notre Dame and Sydney, and others getting fellowships and scholarships like AusAID, Fullbright, Chevening, Norwegian Aid and others. We feel honored to see our LLM alumni consisting of 41 Judges deputed in various district and high courts, 5 Senior Advocates, 90 plus Government Attorneys and other government service holders and Academicians leading various law departments and law colleges.

Regarding our achievements in international spheres, we have set a record of winning Henry Dunant International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition, National Rounds for 15 straight times and Regional Rounds in 2016 and 2018. Similarly, we are the undoubted winner in almost all the national level moot court competitions like Laxman Prasad Aryal Memorial, Bharat Raj Upreti Memorial and others. Our international collaborations with academic institutions under various programmes like The Kathmandu Dialogue, The Himalayan Field School, International Winter Residential Program on Economic, Social and Development Rights are making our presence felt globally. Likewise, Asia Pacific Master’s Programme (taught in collaboration of five academic institutions of Nepal, India, Bangladesh, China, and Thailand) resonate our far-reaching international collaborations with over 100 universities around the world.

I also take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to all my motivated colleagues who have been all along sacrificing their time and energy in developing this institution. We owe thanks to all those government and non government stakeholders in the field of law and justice who have partnered with us in different times.
