Biography

Mr. Suraj Basnet is an accomplished Associate Professor at Kathmandu School of Law and a dedicated practicing lawyer at Kanunalaya Inc., Nepal. With a strong academic foundation, he holds a Master degree of Law with specialization in Criminal Law and Justice from Purbanchal University. His academic journey is further enriched by specialized diploma trainings in Victimology and ESDR undertaken in Japan and Nepal.

Since 2007, Mr. Basnet has been actively engaged in legal education, teaching a diverse range of subjects including Law against Organized Crime, Law of equity, Torts and consumer protection, Juvenile Justice, Legal Research, and Legal History at Kathmandu School of Law. His expertise extends beyond academia as he regularly delivers guest lectures at the Nepal Police, Masters in police science in staff college and Nepal Bar Council contributing to the professional development of law enforcement personnel.

In addition to teaching, Mr. Basnet plays a vital role in capacity-building initiatives. He has conducted numerous trainings and workshops on various legal issues in collaboration with prominent organizations such as the Juvenile Justice Coordination Committee, Plan International, INSEC, CeLRRd and the Nepal Bar Council. His involvement reflects a strong commitment to bridging theory and practice in the legal field.

Mr. Basnet has also made significant contributions to research, participating in key studies such as the Baseline Survey on the Juvenile Justice System of Nepal, the Criminal Justice System of Nepal and the Rights of Domestic Workers in Nepal. His international exposure includes a month-long teacher training program organized by SAILS in Bangladesh, where he also delivered lectures at various law schools. Furthermore, he visited the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA), USA, in 2008, broadening his perspective on victim-centered justice approaches.

A scholar deeply committed to academic excellence and research, Mr. Basnet focuses on critical areas such as restorative justice, criminal justice reform and juvenile justice. Alongside his academic and research pursuits, he is widely recognized as a dynamic and effective litigating lawyer, particularly in the field of criminal law.
